Finishing techniques for walnut wood. walnut has a chocolate color prized by craftsmen and woodworkers. it is one of the softer of the hardwoods, ranking only 5 on a hardness scale, with 10 being. Darker woods like walnut, on the other hand, look better with a “warmer” finish that brings out the rich, dark color. if you plan on using a water-borne varnish or lacquer finish, consider warming up the walnut first with a coat of dye. we used the aged walnut recipe diluted three parts to one. allow the dye to dry.. A better quality brush translates into smoother finish application because a good brush holds more finish. oil finishes deepen the color of walnut. that’s a nice look and the oil adds protection, but it does nothing to warm the cool characteristics of the hardwood, especially the look of steamed walnut, which is grayish brown when freshly milled..

Walnut can have some amazing grain patterns that, while quite dark, can be extremely attractive when finished properly. the first step to showing off these grain patterns is to sand the wood properly. hand sanding with the grain is the best way to massage this hardwood into bringing out its beautiful grain, working with progressively finer grits of sandpaper as you go.. Most of the walnut i am able to buy is steamed, and it has, as a result a bit of a gray cast to it and appears dull even after finishing, compared to wood that wasn't steamed. i discovered this the hard way when i finished a project with my usual finish, blo followed by a tung oil/ varnish/ turpentine wipe on mix..
