woodwork materials technology
Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants.it is an organic material – a natural composite of cellulose fibers that are strong in tension and embedded in a matrix of lignin that resists compression. wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees, or it is defined more broadly to include the same. The wood material technology group, headed by professor mark hughes, provides teaching and conducts research in the area of wood technology. the group has strong links with the wood processing industry in finland and abroad as well as having strong collaborations with other research groups both nationally and internationally.. Materials technology (wood) is assessed at two levels, ordinary level and higher level, by means of a written examination paper and a student project. note: specifications for the technology subjects will be revised in phase 6 of the junior cycle developments, with the changes commencing in 2019, for certification in 2022.. woodwork materials technology
Junior cycle wood technology aims to develop the necessary conceptual understanding, disciplinary skills, and subject knowledge to investigate and solve real-life problems while progressing the development of a range of manipulation skills through processing wood and other materials.
